If you've ever wondered about how the detective novel came to be so popular, this list should give you a good place to start.

1) The Book of Daniel and Oedipus Rex both have the main characters questioning witnesses to solve a mystery.
2) In The Three Apples, one of the tales in One Thousand and One Nights, the Caliph’s vizier was charged with finding the killer of a young woman found in a chest, and told to do so within three days or his life was forfeit.
3) Voltaire’s Zadig (1748) an early example of detective fiction.
4) Detective fiction in the English speaking world is considered to have begun with Edgar Allen Poe’s Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841).
5) Charles Dickens’ Bleak House has a mystery as one of its subplots.
6) Wilkie Collins (Charles Dickens’ protégé) is credited with both the “first great mystery novel”, The Lady in White (1860), but also the work considered by both T.S. Eliot and Dorothy L. Sayers to be the best detective story written, The Moonstone (1868).
7) In 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the master detective, Sherlock Holmes.
8) The 1920s and 30s are considered the golden age of detective fiction, and included the works of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayres, Ngaio Marsh, and Margery Allingham.
9) During this same period, Rex Stout and Ellery Queen were publishing in America.
10) In 1894, British author Arthur Morrison created the first modern private detective, Martin Hewitt.
11) American authors who produced novels about private eyes included Dashiell Hammett, Jonathan Lattimer, and Erle Stanley Gardner.
12) The late 1930s brought a new private eye, in Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe.
13) The late 1970s and 1980s brought women into the private eye novel with the works of Marcia Muller, Sara Paretsky, and Sue Grafton.

National Poetry Month! And in honor of that, I've created a list of 10 books of poetry. You should be able to find these, or similar titles, at your local library.

1) The Best Poems of the English Language- selected and with commentary by Harold Bloom. Anthologies are a good place to start exploring poetry, it gives you a taste of several different poets, kind of like tapas.

2) She Walks in Beauty: A Woman's Journey through Poems, selected and introduced by Caroline Kennedy. Themed anthologies are another good place to start, as all of the poems will be about the same subject. 3) The collected Poems of Emily Dickinson- for those that like to dive into the deep end there are collected works. Usually organized chronologically, these collections show the growth of the poet. P.S. One piece of trivia about ED's poetry, you can sing any of her poems to the music of The Yellow Rose of Texas or the theme to Gilligan's Island. Go ahead, try it. It works.

SoNo's New Building

Yup, it is finally happening. The South Norfolk Memorial Library is getting a new building. Plans are for us to reopen in the new building in 2012. Not sure what we'll be doing, or where we'll be when they tear down the old building (which really needs it), so they can build our new home. Two weeks ago the city had a town meeting to show the public the architects designs for the outside of the building. After after trying several times to load pdf files onto this blog, I decided to just give you the link to the slideshow, and you can go and see it for yourself. The link is here. Not sure when they'll give us the word to pack up and move out, but we'll be ready when they do.

13 sites with free ebooks

Seeing as how the grand prize for the Adult Summer Reading Program is a Sony Ereader, and we will soon have ebooks available through the catalog (coming eventually), I decided to list 13 sites from which you can legally download free ebooks. In most cases, the files are available as PDFs and can be downloaded to your computer (if you don't have a dedicated reader). They are:

1) Amazon's Kindle Store's Free Books Collections- including Limited Time Promotional Offers and Most Popular Classics. Don't have a Kindle? Never fear there are Kindle apps you can download free for just about any device, listed here.

2) Internet Archive- Interesting assortment of collections from dance manuals from 1490 to 1929 to Harvard Classics to a collection of cookbooks and books on home economics.

3) Open Library- the seemingly endless list of subjects one can browse includes astronauts, Texas, diaries, Riots, Assam, Pleistocene, Colette, Carpentry, Accessible Books (and those are just the examples from their home page).

4) Project Gutenburg- which we all know and love. :)

5) Many Books .Net- where you can search by authors, titles, languages, and genres (which includes such things as audiobooks, banned books, Canadian Literature, cooking, correspondance, Creative Commons, espionage, nautical, occult, and pirate tales among many more).

6) Suvudu's Free Library-Science fiction and fantasy site, regularly updated, so if you don't see anything you like, you might want to subscribe to their monthly updates.

7) Barnes & Noble Free ebooks- You have to create an account to download the books, which doesn't take long (just remember your password).

8) Classic Authors .Net- not just novels, but essays, poems, plays- no longer will you need to worry that the library's only copy of Oedipus Rex is checked out.

9) World Wide School Library- I haven't had much chance to explore this site, but what I have seen was really cool, in all subjects: literature, history, geography, science, social sciences, other languages.

10) Bookyards- Includes biographies and other pertinent information with author pages.

11) Free Ebooks .Net-The first screen for each title gives you the option of reading it online, read as a pdf, read on mobi, and read as an epub.

12) Free-Book 58 Search .Com- Yes, it does have free ebooks, but their subject headings are rather confusing, leading to unrelated titles or to dead ends. I looked up books on the history of the Holocaust and got a book titled The Writings of George Washington. Got into Fiction, click on Westerns, and then click on Louis L'Amour, and pull up The Songs of the Ridings by Frederic Moorman. It wouldn't be my first choice, but if you can't find something specific on any other site, you might try here.

13) Fictionwise- Despite the title of this website, much of its offers are nonfiction, even the free titles: which include The Iraq Study Group Report, Oxford Paperback Thesaurus, Oxford Concise Medical Dictionary, and Oxford Dictionary of World History.

Thirteen Steampunk Novels

Steampunk is an interesting amalgam of science fiction and history, one where the science and technology are powered by steam or spring driven. The best movie examples of steam punk would be Wild, Wild West with Will Smith, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and the newest Sherlock Holmes. The covers look interesting, the stories sound intriguing, and the summer is the perfect time to try out a new genre.

I know, technically the first book is not a novel but an anthology. I like anthologies because they're a good way to discover new authors without the commitment of a full length novel. Enjoy

2) Not Less Than Gods by Kage Baker3) Soulless by Gail Carriger- several people have recommended this series to me, and the covers caught my eye at the book store. I might end up getting this, and the one after it.
4) I have both of her books- on the mountainous collection known as to be read.
5) I love these covers- I grew up fascinated with derigibles ever since hearing that my mom saw the Hindenburg fly over her apartment building just prior to its explosion.
6) I love her vampires and her dragons- haven't read this yet.

8) The twenties are a fascinating time period- still healing the wounds of the first ww, yet slowly setting the stage for the second. 9) Cool cover
10) The blurb drew me into this one.

Thirteen Things You Can Do Using NovelList

1) You can search by author, title, series, or describe a plot (for instance if you type in vampire and Las Vegas you get 17 titles).

2) You can browse the award winners and get a list of (almost) every book award out there, or search by specific award or genre. For example, searching under Romance brings up the Quill Book Award, the Rita (presented annually by the Romance Writers of America), and the Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Awards.
3) You can browse the author read a like lists, which has a wide assortment of authors- for example: Deborah Crombie, Jennifer Crusie, Clive Cussler, and MaryJanice Davidson (which includes Katie MacAlister, Julie Kenner, Carrie Vaughn, Michelle Rowen, and Kim Harrison on her list).

4) For authors like Anne Perry, who has more than one series, or J.D. Robb, with 36 titles in her one series- clicking on the series title produces a printable list of the titles in that series (in order).

5) If you search for Dakota Cassidy- it also pulls up Angie Fox and says that her books will appeal to fans of Dakota (and I would agree having read them both).
6) There are also a variety of book discussion guides, for adult books and teen's books, as well as booktalks for the older kids (9-12).

7) The featured articles provide lists of books, based around a theme, for both adults and young adults. Some of the YA lists include: Beyond Happy Endings; Beyond Harry Potter; Misfits and Free Spirits: Teen fiction looks at the nonconformist; and Things that Matter: Fiction from Down Under for Teens.

8) You can find other themed book lists under recommended reading.

9) Each of the reviewers also does a monthly write up under What We're Reading.

10) In the children's section, there are Curricular Connections- lists of fiction and nonfiction books on specific topics, such as animals in folklore, the fifty states, Canada, and also further breaks it into preschool and elementary through middle and high school.

11) NovelList also has a list of links for the curriculum standards for all 50 states and most of the provinces in Canada.

12) For anyone stuck coming up with a storytime, there are picture book extenders. Using one picture book as a starting point (for example- All You Need for a Snowman), they give you a list of discussion questions, a list of activities and crafts, and a list of other titles that could be read with it.

13) Most pages have the print option, as well as the add to folder; some pages also let you save it, email it to yourself, or bookmark it to any of a hundred social media sites (blogger, Facebook, google reader...).

For the next few months or so, the Thursday Thirteens on here will be focusing on the library's databases, to help our library patrons become more familiar with them. Patrons can access the databases on our internet computers as well as from home using their library card and pin number. For those of our blog readers not in the Chesapeake area (anyone in Virginia can get a library card from Chesapeake at no charge), check with your local library- most libraries have some electronic databases to which they subscribe.

Cookbooks Galore

Cookbooks I'd Like to Add to my Collection

Of course I probably need another cookbook like I need a hole in my head. What can I say I'm addicted to books, cookbooks included. I could say that one of my new year's resolutions is to eat healthier, and to cut out fast food, and that I need new recipes. But instead, I'll just present the books I'd like to have.

1) Julie & Julia by Julie Powell. It started as a blog, was made into a movie, and reminded me that cooking can be fun (living alone it can get boring).

2) Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child. No, I have no desire to recreate Julie Powell's experiment. What I would like to do is master the art of making the 5 mother sauces (and no I don't know all of the names, yet).

3) Ace of Cakes by Duff Goldman. I'm already pretty good at baking cakes. I just like watching the show.

4) More Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives by Guy Fieri. I love this show: seeing what other people have come up with, and the off beat places to visit (when I get the chance). It must be time for a road trip.

5) Good Eats by Alton Brown. He not only explains the what of cooking but the why and the how. He keeps the recipes simple (relatively) and the science interesting. And funny.

6) Gear for Your Kitchen by Alton Brown. You have to gear to be a kitchen wizard, and some of the cooking gear is really cool. What I really need, though, is a bigger kitchen to use my gear in.

7) Food Network Favorites from the chefs of Food Network. Do I really need to say anything? :)

8) Food Network Kitchens Favorite Recipes- recipes from the behind the scenes staff at the food network.

9) Cat Cora's Kitchen- It's always interesting watching her on Iron Chef America and seeing what she cooks up with the secret ingredients.

10) Paula Deen's The Deen Family Cookbook. Again. What more needs to be said?

11) Tyler's Ultimate- by Tyler Florence. He's very good at explaining things as he goes on his show. And his recipes all sound incredible.

12) Barefoot in Paris by Ina Garten. French cooking explained by an American, the secret of Julia Child's success.

13) Quick Fix Meals by Robin Miller- my weeks don't seem to work quite the way hers do. But just making the first meal, with enough to heat up as left overs would be a big help.

On Thursday October 8, the South Norfolk Memorial Library was in the news, and on tv, for the dedication of the Memorial Plaque in honor of the students of the old South Norfolk High School who served in World War II. The plaque was almost lost when the old high school was demolished, but former student and WWII veteran, Raymond Harper, saved the plaque and with help from city officials restored it before giving it to the library. Thirteen Books on my To Be Read List

It's not Thursday, so this isn't exactly a Thursday Thirteen. But it's been so long since I posted anything, I was feeling guilty for neglecting my blogs. So here is a list of 13 YA series on my to be read list (stack, pile, mountain range). They are:

1) Darkest Powers Series by Kelley Armstrong (Book 1- The Summoning)- The first two are The Summoning and The Awakening. The third book in the trilogy is The Reckoning, due out May 2010. You can read about it here.

2) The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod by Heather Brewer (Book 1- Eighth Grade Bites)- The first two are Eighth Grade Bites and Nineth Grade Slays. The series has an interesting premise, lots of books have vampires going through high school, but in this he is going through all of this for the first time. So in addition to dealing with puberty and school, he has to deal with being a vampire (and must remember not to bite his friends). You can read more about it here.

3) The Morganville Vampire Series by Rachel Caine (Book 1- Glass Houses). The first two are Glass Houses and The Dead Girls Dance. You can read more about them here.

4) The House of Night Series by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast-(Book 1- Marked) The first two books are Marked and Betrayed. You can read more about it here.

5) The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare (Book 1- City of Bones). The first two books are City of Bones and City of Ashes. You can read more about it here.

12) The Vampire Diaries is another series by L.J. Smith, and has also been turned into a TV series. I've only seen the first episode but it looked promising (I'm not a regular tv watcher- my schedule is not very regular and I never remember when things are on, so don't judge it by me).

13) Blue is for Nightmares Series- the first two are Blue is for Nightmares and White is for Magic. The fifth is actually a graphic novel titled Black is for Beginnings. The author's website is here.

Thirteen Authors I Met (Or Met Again)
at the Romantic Times Booklover Convention in Orlando last week

I intended to post blog entries while in Orlando,the hotel's high speed internet was... wishful thinking. I think the problem was too many people trying to use it at one time (at any time- day or night) and there was just too much to do and too many people to see that blogging did not happen. But I did get to talk with authors. Lots of authors.

1) Mario Acevedo- I saw him on a panel for humor in paranormals. His books include: Nymphos of Rocky Flats and Jailbait Zombie (and no I haven't read them. Yet. They are on the mountain known as to be read- the very big mountain).

2)Vivi Anna- writes vampires for Silhouette Nocturne Series- titles include: Vampire's Quest and Veiled Truth. I have read some, not all, the others are on Mt. TBR (think Everest).

3) Michele Bardsley- writes a series set in Broken Heart, Oklahoma, where all of the single parents are turned into vampires, and their world is turned upside down. Books include: I'm the Vampire, That's Why and Over My Dead Body.

4) Jennifer Lynn Barnes- whose books include Tattoo, Fate, and The Squad Series.

5) Anya Bast- writes a series about elemental witches. Titles include: Witch Heart, Witch Fire, and Witch Blood.

6) Jenna Black- Books are The Devil Inside, The Devil You Know, and The Devil's Due- about a possessed exorcist.

7)Dakota Cassidy- has written three books about a trio of friends and their accidental exposure to the paranormal. Titles include: The Accidental Werewolf, Accidentally Dead, and The Accidental Human. She has a new book coming out in June- Kiss and Hell.

8)Angie Fox- has two books out- The Accidental Demon Slayer and The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers (both are on Mt. TBR)

9)Stacia Kane- author of Personal Demons and Demon Inside due out in July.

10) Judi McCoy- author of a new dog-walker mystery series- the first title is Hounding the Pavement.

11) Michelle Rowen- writes vampire books with titles such as Bitten and Smitten, Stakes and Stilletos, and Lady & the Vamp.

12) Jeri Smith-Ready-writes a cool book about a radio station where the djs are all vampires called Wicked Game. Book 2, Bad to the Bone, comes out in May.

13) Jeanne C. Stein- her series protagonist, Anna Strong, is a bounty hunter working with her partner when the bounty they're chasing attacks her and turns her into a vampire. I've only read the first two so far, but am looking forward to reading more.

Bonus Photo- L.A. Banks- who couldn't stay for the bookfair (darn it all), but was on the vampire panel I went to. I've only read the first book in her series, but am interested to see where she goes from there.

The New Look

Here are some of the pictures of the library's new look.

This is the new fiction/large print section. One of the things we changed was to pull the genres out from the regular fiction/large print: mystery, romance, and science fiction/ fantasy.

Lots of changes, I'd intended to post this as a Thursday Thirteen, but it didn't happen. I'll post more pictures as things happen.
1) We're weeding the collection (this is now the Reference section).

2) We're getting rid of some bookcases (this used to hold the rest of the Reference collection).

3) And rearranging others(this is non fiction post weeding).

4)We're creating new displays for the library.

5) We'll be redoing the Children's section (this is post weeding).

6) We'll be creating a separate area for teens
7) We're going to rearrange the computers.
8) And add more seating.
9) And some fresh paint.
10) And create more displays.
11) And get self-check out (eventually).
12) And get new materials to replace the ones we've been weeding.
13) And ultimately a bigger space (in the next year or two).
